A leading figure in Gigondas

A leading figure in Gigondas

The history of the estate begins in 1929, when Pierre Amadieu began selling wine from the family's 7 hectares of vines under his own name. He was among the first to put the name Gigondas on the bottles.

Pierre, assisted by his wife, developed the family estate and became a major player in the region. As early as 1945, he built, on two underground levels, a winemaking cellar and a wine aging cellar.

Years pass, generations too, and the initial 7 hectares gradually grow to 137 today. Maison Pierre Amadieu thus represents the largest privately owned vineyard in Gigondas.

Many members of the family now contribute to the success of the family estate. Pierre, grandson of the founder, shares the same first name and passion as his grandfather. He is in charge of winemaking and aging the wines.

His uncle Claude works in the vineyard, while the latter's children are active in the commercial department, for winemaking and blending, or with private clients and the sales cellar.

The vineyards are surrounded by 200 hectares of garrigue and woodland, a haven of biodiversity that protects the vines. Pierre Amadieu has also planted numerous olive trees and Florentine cypress trees on the estate.

A pioneer in many ways, Pierre was already grazing a large number of sheep in the vineyards. Present in many vineyards today, they control weed growth while producing fertilizer!

The vineyard is on average over 40 years old, with some old vines planted by Pierre Amadieu himself. Committed to preserving its heritage, the estate obtained organic certification in 2023.

A fine, high-altitude finish

The Pierre Amadieu house seeks to express the distinctive terroirs of the north-east zone of the Gigondas appellation, of which it is practically the sole owner, in the heart of the Dentelles de Montmirail massif.

The northern exposure of these high-altitude plots – up to 500m! – avoids excessive sun exposure, while the Mistral, this violent wind that sweeps down the Rhône Valley, helps to aerate and cool the vines.

The typical Mediterranean grape varieties of the region ripen slowly and are harvested later, resulting in generous and structured wines that impress with their balance, elegance, and finesse.
