This is structured and a little tight, with good concentration and volume. It’s medium-bodied with juicy and vibrant fruit coming through. Velvety tannins. Firm and fresh at the end.

Offering up aromas of minty cassis, dark berries and pencil shavings, the 2023 Chasse-Spleen is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and youthfully structured, with good depth at the core and a penetrating finish. It's a strong effort. William Kelley

57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc. Chasse-Spleen covers almost 80 hectares of vines and produces around 350,000 bottles a year. The soil of the vineyard is composed of Garonne gravel and asteriated limestone. Vinification takes place in stainless steel and cement vats, followed by 12 to 16 months in barrels, 40% of which are new. Chasse-Spleen is fruity and fresh at the outset, with pleasant notes of red berries and chalky nuances. Rather slender, the wine gains a little width thanks to the compact tannins, while the acidity provides fruit and freshness on the finish. A wine of character that will gain body with age. 2028-2040.

Château Chasse-Spleen

In the 19th century, the property under the name of Grand Poujeaux was divided and Madame Castaing became the owner. She renamed the area “Chasse-Spleen” in reference to the collection “Les Fleurs du Mal”. In 1976, the Château and its 103 ha wine estate were bought by the Merlaut family.
