Le domaine du Père Caboche et ses environs

Le domaine du Père Caboche et ses environs

Did you know?

- Why this name? The Popes settled in Avignon at the beginning of the 14th century. The vineyards were developed in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with the aim of strengthening this "decentralised" papacy, far from Rome.

- Back in Rome, the Popes continued to buy Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine and the region enjoyed success after success!

- It became France's first AOC wine in 1936.

- The bottle with the coat of arms was created immediately afterwards, in 1937. The coat of arms symbolises a papal tiara above the keys of St Peter.

- The AOC is comprised of 93% red wines and 7% white wines.

- 13 different grape varieties are authorised and may be blended, even all of the reds! These are Grenache (Black, Grey, White), Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, Clairette (White, Rose), Vaccarèse, Bourboulenc, Roussanne, Counoise, Muscardin, Picpoul (White, Grey, Black), Picardan and Terret Noir

➔ Since 2006, the AOC has been recognised as a Site Remarquable du Goût, a French tourist and gastronomic accolade.

➔ Châteauneuf-du-Pape is also part of the Slow Food approach, which puts local produce and quality, ecologically and socially responsible food back at the centre of focus.

Emilie Boisson

Emilie Boisson, now at the head of the estate, is carrying on a family history that goes back to the 18th century. Her viticulture is ever more precise and respectful of the terroir, and she is making the Domaine du Père Caboche shine. In a region with a rich history, she shares her top tips with us:

Things to do :

- In Châteauneuf-du-Pape, there's a château, of course! This former summer residence of the Popes of Avignon dates back to the 14th century. Although not much remains of it today, its location offers a great view.

- Avignon is not far away, with its imposing Palais des Papes, the largest Gothic building in the Middle Ages. There's also its famous bridge, for a little dance... and also its festival in July.
- Châteauneuf-du-Pape will be hosting the Avignon "OFF" festival teams for the 9th year running, from July 15-19 2024, for open-air shows. Enjoy the show with a glass of local wine, thanks to the bar set up for the occasion, with over 20 wineries on hand!

- 2 walking trails:
◦ To discover the Châteauneuf-du-Pape AOC vineyards
◦ To discover the Courthézon salt pond - a migratory stop and haven of biodiversity in the heart of the famous Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards.

- Where to eat :
Au Verger des Papes, for its setting, its view (at the foot of the château, at the top of the village) and its Provençal cuisine. The menu includes Châteauneuf-du-Pape from the Domaine du Père Caboche!
