Syrah in France
The birthplace of Syrah is in France, more precisely near the prestigious regions of Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie in the Rhône Valley. It is also planted in other regions of the South of France: in Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon. In terms of style, the emphasis is often placed on the expression of the terroir rather than on its purely varietal characteristics. Vinified in red as in rosé, it is therefore often blended with other complementary grape varieties, such as Viognier in the Northern Rhône Valley, Grenache and Mourvèdre in the Southern Rhône Valley, to which is added Cinsault in Provence and Carignan in Languedoc-Roussillon. It brings color, structure, as well as floral and spicy notes to blends. Syrah is often partially aged in oak barrels: the slight exposure to oxygen allows it to express itself in a more harmonious way and avoid excessive notes of reduction.
Head to the Côtes du Rhône appellation, where Domaine du Père Caboche blends the five emblematic grape varieties of the South of France in its flagship vintage : Syrah – which brings spicy notes, acidity and tannic structure – as well as as Grenache, Carignan, Mourvèdre and Cinsault. An elegant vintage with silky tannins. For a more atypical vintage, Domaine du Père Caboche also produces Petit Caboche , a blend of Syrah and three other more confidential French grape varieties: Marselan, Egiodola and Caladoc, for a concentrated, fruity wine.
Another famous blend from the Rhône Valley is “Grenache, Syrah, Mourvèdre”, often called “GSM”. Domaine de Montvac produces a divine example, 100% organic, on the lands of the Gigondas appellation, close to the prestigious Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation in the Southern Rhône Valley. This “Adage” cuvée is a marriage between the deliciousness of Grenache, the elegance of Syrah and the power of Mourvèdre.
Syrah flourishes wonderfully in Languedoc, where its characteristics are praised in red blends. For a powerful and spicy vintage, with remarkable length, MaisonLorgeril offers Château de Ciffre “Terroirs d'Altitude” , a “GSM” blend, whose name testifies to the high altitude terroir of Faugères, on schist soils, suitable for to the production of top-flight wines. Further west, in the Cabardès appellation, "L'Esprit de Pennautier" from Château de Pennautier, also by Maison Lorgeril, is an exceptional cuvée, this time blending Syrah, Grenache and Merlot . Rich and concentrated, it combines intense aromas of prune, cherry, cocoa and roasting. The Cuvée Danglas from winemaker Annick Danglas offers a “GSM” version perfectly balanced between notes of plum, morello cherry and licorice, silky tannins and freshness: a superb Minervois. For a large-scale “Grenache Syrah” duo, the Pic winegrowers produce the Réserve Les Almades in the young appellation of Pic Saint Loup. They brilliantly juggle carbonic maceration and traditional vinification to produce a wine with scents of red fruits and violets, racy and elegant.
And the rosé in all this? Our favorite vintage, where Syrah is combined with Grenache, Viognier and Grenache Blanc, comes from Languedoc, in a vineyard with breathtaking views of the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean Sea. “Ô de Rosé” from Maison Lorgeril is a lively and fresh wine, which reveals delicious aromas of citrus, strawberry and rhubarb, and elegant saline notes.
Syrah in Switzerland
Syrah is experiencing growth in our Swiss lands, particularly in Valais , where it was introduced in 1926. It produces high-class, noble, powerful wines with good aging potential. Valais Syrahs also rival the best Syrahs in the world: the grape variety has in fact adapted perfectly to the terroir of the Old Country with its dry, hot and windy mountain climate. Compared to neighboring French vintages, these climatic influences bring an additional subtlety of spices and violets, freshness and aromatic concentration. Syrah is frequently the origin of single-varietal vintages.
A 100% Syrah cuvée from Valais, “La Guérite” by Maurice Gay , has all the arguments to seduce: strong scents of spices and black pepper, a robust structure and a lot of elegance. The house also offers “Valais d'Or” Crête d'Or, a blend of Syrah, Pinot Noir , Cabernet Sauvignon and Diolinoir . Four grape varieties with character, for a powerful vintage with a persistent finish, aromas of black fruits and vanilla. Still in Valais, the Reserve of the Administrators of Cave St-Pierre is an admirable showcase of Syrah. A single-varietal cuvée of excellent quality, aged in oak barrels to give a complex and harmonious wine, where red fruits, violet and blackcurrant respond to notes of spices and liquorice. Another surprising example from this region with “Madame De” , always 100% Syrah, produced by Domaine du Mont d’Or . You will discover intense notes of blackcurrant and black pepper, to which are added a touch of dark chocolate, for a dense and fleshy whole.
The Syrahs from the canton of Vaud are also notable for their quality. In Chablais, in Yvorne, the Clos du Rocher Grand Cru Rouge is a blend of Syrah, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, which reveals the character of this unique mountain terroir, where black fruits and cocoa notes combine to give a harmonious and concentrated cuvée, with a long finish. The Testuz family , established in Dézaley, in the heart of the Lavaux vineyard, has bet on a Vaudoise Syrah vintage. Les Oenocrates Syrah is aged for 12 months in oak barrels, giving a wine perfectly balanced between power and elegance. Bright !
Syrah in Italy
Like French wines, Italian vintages are characterized by the expression of the terroir, through refined vintages with herbaceous notes.
In Tuscany , Syrah is planted in the heights to benefit from both the freshness of the altitude and the Mediterranean sun of the region. It is often blended with Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, the two emblematic grape varieties of the region, as in the Governo all'Uso Toscano vintage where it brings elegant floral notes and a fresh finish.
Syrah in Spain
A grape variety used for the production of iconic Rioja wines, Syrah is also planted in Catalonia, in the regions of Valencia and Murcia, and is growing throughout the country. It is mainly found in blends with other Spanish grape varieties, providing acidity, color and fruity aromas.
In Catalonia, its freshness and elegant aromas are prized for the production of the “Bancel del Bosc” cuvée, a biodynamic cuvée from the Montsant appellation, at the gates of Priorat. The Domènech family perfectly masters the balance between Grenache and Syrah, giving a complex and lively wine, with notes of red fruits, liquorice and resin. Further south, near Valencia, the association between a Swiss and two Spaniards at Bodegas Hispano+Suizas gave birth to “Bassus” Finca Casilla Herrera , an excellent vintage, produced with precision. Made from the best Syrah, Merlot, Bobal, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot grapes, and aged for more than 20 months in oak barrels, this cuvée surprises with its concentration, the complexity of its fruity and woody aromas and its exceptional length.
Syrah in the United States
The vast majority of Syrah is planted in California. Generally speaking, producers focus on the expression of its fruit, producing rich and generous vintages, with particularly intense aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry, cherry, prune and black pepper, and ample and supple tannins.
Francis Ford Coppola Winery produces the Diamond Collection Syrah-Shiraz cuvée from Syrah from three vineyards, San Lucas, Paso Robles and Hames Valley, in order to take advantage of the properties of different production locations: freshness for fresher aromas and elegant, sunshine for riper aromas and generosity. The aromas of the fruit are supported by notes of leather and nutmeg following aging for 9 months in French oak barrels. The result is remarkably complex and balanced.
Shiraz in Australia
Impossible not to mention Shiraz, the Australian term for Syrah. Australia is in second position, after France, in area of Syrah planted, and it is the first grape variety planted in the country. Shiraz produces full-bodied, dense and generous wines, with aromas of ripe fruit and high alcohol. A success both nationally and internationally.
Other Syrah producing countries
Syrah is also very successful in other wine-growing regions of South Africa, Chile, Argentina, New Zealand, Portugal and Canada. She definitely hasn't finished talking about her!
