Cos d'Estournel 2019
Red wine | 2nd Cru Classé, Saint-Estèphe AOC
Like a solitary adventurer having sailed across the seas, Cos d'Estournel seems at first secret and intriguing. Then it reveals itself, slowly. Step by step, in small touches, he evokes stories of distant cities, of markets with a thousand secrets, of joyful celebrations in villages with hot stones, of women with voluptuous curves.

98 100Yves BeckSo much intensity, elegance and complexity in this bouquet! It reveals itself very gently, which is typical for Cos and reveals its terroir well. So I note notes of graphite and cedar but also black berries, currants and freshness through nuances of peppermint. The appetizer is imposing in the way it reveals itself. The elements appear one by one and are positioned in the palace, putting their particularity in focus. The delicious side appears from the attack and is followed by fruity notes. The tannins appear late on the finish and take on the role of quiet strength. They are powerful but subtle, fine but serene and, above all, they have the necessary material to not only give substance to the structure but also position themselves as masters of the place! They know that they will take Cos 2019 very far! Even if the tannic breadth “relegates” the structure to the background, the latter fulfills its role well by conferring class and freshness. Ultimately, the symbiosis is perfect. The finale has the heritage of managing this multitude of elements and, like the whole wine, it frames them perfectly. It is persistent and… relevant! It’s a great Cos d’Estournel. You will have to know how to wait for it, while sipping Goulée for example???? 2026-2054.

98 100James SucklingA very powerful and structured Cos. It's full and layered, but not overpowering in terms of fruit. It's more about the abundant, very fine tannins. It's a classic wine with historical grip and power. Real Bordeaux. Sophisticated and provocative.

98 100Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateHarvest for the grand vin began on the 23rd of September and finished on the 7th of October. Composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot (with no Petit Verdot or Cabernet Franc this year), yields for this wine in 2019 were 43 hectoliters per hectare, and it is aging in 55% new oak. It came in at an alcohol level of 14.02% and an IPT of 67. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Cos d'Estournel soars out of the glass with vibrant black raspberries, Black Forest cake and crushed blackcurrants scents plus nuances of red roses, wild sage, dark chocolate and cast-iron pan with a waft of woodsmoke. The medium to full-bodied palate is taut, muscular and built like a skyscraper, with firm, grainy tannins and seamless freshness supporting the concentrated black fruit flavors, finishing with incredible length and depth. This wine so beautifully, clearly captures the juxtaposition between the periods of dry heat and those hallelujah moments of refreshing rain - the hallmarks of this great vintage. It's a vinous masterpiece in the making.

96 100Jean-Marc QuarinDark, intense, purple and lively color. Very aromatic, fine nose, with ripe and subtle fruitiness. Ample on the attack, juicy and immediately very fragrant, the wine melts on the palate before being rich, meticulous in its touch and lingering for a long time, with a noble, powerful and tasty finish. It is superb. Blend: 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot. Alcohol content: 14°02 – pH: 3.77 – IPT: 67. 2030 – 2055.
Dark red with purplish reflections.
Magnificent bouquet with aromas of blackberries, licorice wood, gingerbread and Sichuan pepper.
Velvety entry into the mouth, beautiful body, powerful, fine-grained tannins, fresh and lively structure, fruity finish, spicy and persistent.
The word "Cos" means, in old Gascon, "the hill of stones". The Cos hill stands on the banks of the Gironde, an impressive pile of gravel, deposited on the limestone base of Saint-Estèphe.
Vatting for 21 days at controlled temperature, aging for 18 months in oak barrels, 80% of which is new wood.
