Cos d'Estournel 2009
Red wine | 2nd Cru Classé, Saint-Estèphe AOC
Like a solitary adventurer having sailed across the seas, Cos d'Estournel seems at first secret and intriguing. Then it reveals itself, slowly. Step by step, in small steps, it evokes stories of distant cities, of markets with a thousand secrets, of joyful celebrations in villages with hot stones, of women with voluptuous curves.

100 100Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateDeep garnet colored, the 2009 Cos d'Estournel features a myriad of wonderfully intense notes, including blackcurrant pastilles, redcurrant jelly, kirsch and blueberry compote with hints of rose hip tea, sautéed herbs, underbrush, pencil shavings and Indian spices. Full-bodied, rich and opulently fruited in the mouth, it has beautifully plush tannins and fantastic freshness, finishing very long and very spicy. Drinking window: 2020 - 2065. Lisa Perrotti-Brown.

Bonne longueur. Juin 2019.

93 100DecanterIntense, pureed damson fruit aromas remind me of its impact at En primeur, although then it was a little overblown. The terroir is starting to come through now, but the fruit still feels a touch overripe and overly concentrated, not enabling the juiciness that the clay soils of St-Estèphe should be highlighting. It's still extremely young with a great life ahead of it, so this is one to put away for a while longer and give that terroir more of a chance to exert itself over the vintage character. Drinking window: 2018 - 2038. Jane Anson. January 2019.

95 100Wine EnthusiastBarrel sample. A hugely rich wine, where the tannins seem initially lost in the overwhelming fruit. It has power and concentration, showing its alcohol a little. There is great intensity, but an edge of Portiness from the super-rich fruit. 94-96. Roger Voss.

Dark red with purplish reflections.
Magnificent bouquet with aromas of blackberries, licorice wood, gingerbread and Sichuan pepper.
Velvety entry into the mouth, beautiful body, powerful, fine-grained tannins, fresh and lively structure, fruity finish, spicy and persistent.
The word "Cos" means, in old Gascon, "the hill of stones". The Cos hill stands on the banks of the Gironde, an impressive pile of gravel, deposited on the limestone base of Saint-Estèphe.
Vatting for 21 days at controlled temperature, aging for 18 months in oak barrels, 80% of which is new wood.
