Wine-growing terroir

The terroir of Château Prieuré-Lichine is essentially composed of gravel deposited by the river during glacial breakups. Runoff then cut these sedimentary soils into well-drained hillocks which, today, face the Gironde.

Winemaking

Vatting for 25 to 27 days in stainless steel and concrete vats, aging for 16 months in oak barrels, 50% of which is new wood.

James Suckling Blackberry with white-pepper and some tile undertones on the nose. It’s full-bodied with tight, chewy tannins yet so beautifully polished and composed. Lingering finish. This needs time to soften and come together. Best after 2024.

Decanter Prieuré Lichine has done a great job of capturing the rich concentration in the cassis and blackberry fruits that are easily found in 2018, wrapped up perfectly in juicy, vibrant strands of acidity and tannin. There's no question that this is an intense wine, and although the alcohol is not especially high it has a generous texture. Spice notes lend a sense of uplift to balance out the exuberance of the palate. I expect this will close down for a good few years before coming into its own. Prieuré Lichine operate a gravity-fed winery for gentle handling of the fruit. 2018 saw a yield of 35hl/ha. Aged in 45% new oak. - Jane Anson.

Alexandre Ma The nose is racy and juicy, I can even feel squeezed sour jujube from my glass. The entry is crystal clear, without any hint of the oak barrel. The soft tannins are in a silky texture, coupled with scents of cinnamon and toasty hazelnut. Although the palate is less complex, its humble expression still touches me a lot.

Yves Beck Rouge grenat dense. Belle fraîcheur et bonne intensité fruitée dans le bouquet de ce vin. Invitantes notes de cerises et de framboises. Caractère élancé et juteux en bouche. Ici, on ne tente pas d’en faire trop mais d’obtenir l’optimum avec ce que l’on a… et c’est un choix très pertinent. Le vin est juteux, fruité et sera déjà plaisant dans sa jeunesse, tout en disposant de la structure nécessaire pour aller dans le temps. Belle finesse de tannins. 2023-2038.

Château Prieuré-Lichine was founded in the 12th century by the monks of Vertheuil Abbey. In 1951, the pope of wine, Alexis Lichine, acquired and cherished the estate until 2012, the year in which the Ballande group purchased the 78 ha property.
