Colour

A dark, deep purple with almost black highlights.

Nose

Intense, highly aromatic, refined, subtle and noble.

Palate

At first subtle and smooth, very aromatic and gracious mid-palate, with a noble texture and a lovely, flavourful finish with a fine grain, very long and pleasant.

Wine-growing terroir

The estate now covers 38 ha, including 22 ha of Premier Grand Cru Classé. The plots are located in three areas: on a plateau of limestone and green marl at around 90 metres above sea level; on the south-southwest-facing slope on clayey molasses from Frondais; and at the foot of the slope, consisting of deep sand deposited by colluvial processes.

Winemaking

Manual harvest in small crates, overnight in a cold room, mechanical destemming, optical sorting. Plot vinification in thermoregulated stainless steel vats, filled by gravity, without the use of sulfur. Alcoholic fermentation with pumping over and punching down, malolactic fermentation in vats (75%) and barrels (25%). Maceration for approximately 30 days. Aging for 14 to 16 months, separated by batch in oak barrels (60% new wood).

Yves Beck Que d’énergie et de détails dans Gaffelière 2020 ! Le vin se distingue par sa vigueur, mais également sa finesse et son aptitude à complètement positiver les contraintes du millésime. De caractère juteux, il est doté d’une structure acide vive et incisive, tandis que ses tannins, parfaitement intégrés, offrent de la puissance. Ce Gaffelière me semble très abouti, performant et apte à traverser les décennies à venir. Le virage amorcé en 2017 avait été décisif, le niveau de La Gaffelière a surpassé la gloire d’antan en mettant en évidence son appartenance à l’élite de Saint-Emilion. Je dis ça, je dis rien ! Une très belle réussite à suivre dans son évolution. 2026-2055. Décembre 2022.

Jean-Marc Quarin Couleur sombre, intense et pourpre. Nez intense, très aromatique, fin, subtil et noble. Moelleux en entrée de bouche, très aromatique au milieu, parfumé, suave, le vin évolue noble au toucher, sur une belle finale savoureuse au grain fin. C'est long et très bon. Assemblage : 60 % merlot, 40 % cabernet franc. Degré d’alcool : 14°. pH : 3,47. Rendement : 42 hl/ha. Production : 70 % de la récolte. Avril 2021.

Decanter Perfumed, delicate, generous and evocative all in equal measure. The fruit quality is excellent, so vibrant and lifted, shining out of the glass. Really bright with energy and dynamism. Lovely lifted expression full of rose petals, herbal-tinged raspberries, blackcurrants and plums. Chalky, creamy and salty, with a cooling freshness. Lots to like with classic elements as well as touches of the hot vintage. It’s not showing it’s best right now but this is delicious. Drinking window: 2025 - 2044. Georgina Hindle. January 2023.

Robert Parker A worthy follow up to the excellent 2019, the 2020 La Gaffelière bursts with aromas of plums, sweet berries, licorice, mint and loamy soil. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and concentrated, with lively acids and vibrant fruit flavors, it's built around powdery, fine-grained tannins. Cabernet Franc represents fully 40% of the blend. As I wrote last year, this estate, in many respects Saint-Émilion's sleeping giant, is awakening. Drinking window: 2026 - 2050. William Kelley. April 2023.
