Château Gruaud Larose 2018
Red wine | 2nd Cru Classé, Saint-Julien AC
Gruaud Larose has always sought to promote the place of man in the design of his wine. Both in action and in the link he establishes with his vineyard. The vine, the grapes are nothing without man, without the makers of the wines, from the most modest to the most powerful.

96 100Yves Beck67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc Superb bouquet, combining intensity and complexity. Inviting and refreshing notes of raspberries, licorice and mint. Fruity and slightly creamy attack. From the outset the palate displays freshness but also density and power. It owes the latter to racy and tight tannins but also somewhat suave. They are in perfect symbiosis with the freshness and tension of the acid structure which carries the aromatic characteristics until the finish. Very nice fruity intensity on the finish, lots of length. What a great success! 2024-2050

95 100Jean-Marc QuarinBeautiful dark, purple and intense color. Intense, fine, fruity, pure, subtle and noble nose. Delicate on the palate, particularly fruity in development, suave and tasty, with brightness in the taste, the wine evolves rich with a noble touch, towards a great sappy and ascending finish. This is the best constructed and most complete Gruaud Larose that I have tasted early. Could see his grade rise during breeding. www.quarin.com

95 100James SucklingAromas of currants, blackberries, dried flowers, dark chocolate and tobacco leaves. Citrus zest, too. It's full-bodied with firm, ultra fine tannins. Complex and layered with a juicy core of ripe fruit. Silky and delicious. Very creamy and fine-tanned. Better from 2025.

92 100Robert Parker's Wine AdvocateComposed of 67% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, the 2018 Gruaud Larose has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. It comes barreling out of the glass with powerful scents of blackberry preserves, baked plums and crème de cassis plus hints of fruitcake, Indian spices and tobacco leaf. The medium to full-bodied palate offers bags of baked berries flavors and a chewy texture with just enough freshness, finishing spicy. Judging by the slightly rustic tannins and suggestions of dried berry characters, I'm guessing the heat and drought had an impact this year. This said, the wine is very well crafted and delicious right now, although a good 3-4 years in bottle should soften the tannins and bring out further nuances. Lisa Perrotti-Brown

The soils of the Saint-Julien appellation belong to the massifs of gravel and collusions put in place during the two Mindel episodes. They are differentiated by mid-altitude terraces and by the relative balance between the two types of gravel. It is often said that Saint-Julien wine is a happy medium between the strength of Pauillac and the finesse of Margaux.
Maceration for 20 to 30 days at suitable temperature, malolactic fermentation in marc, aging for 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels (30% new wood).
