Château Gruaud Larose 2016
Red wine | 2nd Cru Classé, Saint-Julien AC
Gruaud Larose has always sought to emphasise the importance of people in the creation of its wine, both in terms of their actions and the connection they establish with their vineyards. The vines and grapes are nothing without people, without the winemakers, from the most modest to the most powerful.

Novembre 2018.

95 100DecanterThis is well built and powerful, not exactly subtle, but then none of these wines are. Instead you get complex, layered and concentrated inky fruits, with some aniseed too. The balance and elegance of St-Julien comes in through the tailored and fine tannins on the finish, but while these tannins may be fine, there are lots of them. 80% new oak. Drinking window: 2024 - 2040. Jane Anson. October 2018.

Ensemble me paraissant encore particulièrement jeune. Vous apprécierez son petit degré d'alcool : 13°. Assemblage final : 69 % cabernet sauvignon, 2 % cabernet franc et 29 % merlot. Septembre 2023.

94 100DecanterThe 2016 Gruaud Larose is blended of 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc. Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, it leaps from the glass with notes of red and black cherries, warm plums and freshly crushed blackcurrants plus hints of violets, oolong tea, aniseed and tilled soil with a waft of garrigue. Medium-bodied, the palate struts tons of elegantly fragrant red and black fruit flavors with a firm backbone of ripe, grainy tannins and loads of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. Drinking window: 2021 - 2043. Lisa Perrotti-Brown. November 2018.

94 100Wine EnthusiastThis is a dense, smoky wine with powerful tannins. It follows the line of richness set since the 2014 vintage and balances rich black fruits and concentrated tannins cut with final acidity. Drink from 2025. Roger Voss. January 2019.

The soils of the Saint-Julien appellation belong to the gravel and colluvial deposits formed during the two Mindel episodes. They are characterised by terraces at medium altitude and a relative balance between the two types of gravel. It is often said that Saint-Julien wine strikes a happy medium between the power of Pauillac and the finesse of Margaux.
Maceration for 20 to 30 days at suitable temperature, malolactic fermentation in marc, aging for 18 months in French oak barrels (80% new wood).
