Upon purchasing the property, Patrick Maroteaux expressed the wish to produce wines representative of the Saint-Julien appellation with a unique imprint, the kind that allows great wines to be identified.

Colour

Dark, almost black crimson with purplish hues.

Nose

Complex and pure, very expressive fruitiness.

Palate

Beautiful structure, supported by a remarkable acidity, tasty and rich in tannins of great finesse.

Wine-growing terroir

The Branaire-Ducru vineyard consists of 15 micro-terroirs which extend over 60 ha to the south of the appellation. The vines, aged 35 years on average, are planted on Quaternary gravel-siliceous alluvium soils. Merlot flourishes on clay soils.

Winemaking

Manual harvest, sorting of the grapes as soon as they arrive at the cellar, vinification separated by plot and grape variety in temperature-regulated stainless steel vats, slow maceration for 21 days. Aging for 18 months in oak barrels (60% new barrels).

Jean-Marc Quarin Couleur sombre, intense et belle. Nez très aromatique, fin et fruité. Charnu à l'attaque, délicat au développement, très aromatique, avec du fond entre le milieu et la finale, ce vin s'envole en fin de bouche, profond, très savoureux et noble.

Decanter Juicy and alive, this shines out the glass, compelling and charming with a searing brightness and zestiness - just great acidity that lifts the initial burst on the palate. The liquorice and clove spice is at the fore, as is the slight stoniness that lingers on the tongue, with the angles to the tannins giving the frame. It's forward and well worked, never too in your face, retaining the elegant aspect, but this has that tension and drive, straight and linear. Feels polished but not ready to drink yet. I do love the chalky, cleanness you get on the cheeks and the liquorice spice. Effortlessly balanced and definitely leaves you wanting more. This will be excellent in time. 2024 - 2045. James Suckling More open than many 2015 St.-Juliens at this stage in spite of the firm, dry tannin structure behind the bright cassis. The tannins need some integration, but with some patience (from 2021 or 2022), this will become a rather fine wine.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate The 2015 Branaire-Ducru has a refined and elegant bouquet with more red than black fruit: wild strawberry, damson and a touch of pencil lead as it shifts up the gears with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, quite structured and firm with spicy black fruit laced with cedar. There is a touch of compactness toward the final third, completing what constitutes a very refined and satisfying Branaire-Ducru. 2021 - 2045. Neal Martin.
