Deep, dark crimson.

Nose

Rich and expressive, with aromas of black fruits and floral notes of great finesse.

Palate

Dense, lively, with precise tannins. Long finish of superb purity.

Wine-growing terroir

The Branaire-Ducru vineyard consists of 15 micro-terroirs which extend over 60 ha to the south of the appellation. The vines, aged 35 years on average, are planted on Quaternary gravel-siliceous alluvium soils. Merlot flourishes on clay soils.

Winemaking

Manual harvest, sorting of the grapes as soon as they arrive at the cellar, vinification separated by plot and grape variety in temperature-regulated stainless steel vats, slow maceration for 21 days. Aging for 18 months in oak barrels (60% new barrels).

The Wine Enthusiast With dense fruit and a powerful, complex structure, this is one of the best wines from this chateau. Blackberries, black plums and a rich, generous character are all here, along with fine tannins. Drink this great success from 2018. Roger Voss

Decanter Branaire does a great job with classic, elegant and well-balanced vintages, and here it really is delivering a delicious St-Julien. Plenty of depth to the fruit, alongside pencil lead aromatics. Traces of fig and spice that reflect the drought conditions of early in the year, but it has elegance and sapidity through the finish and is extremely classic. 4% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. 2021 - 2040. Jean-Marc Quarin Couleur sombre et intense. Superbe nez profond, à la note d'encre, de fruits et de réglisse. Bouche suave et très parfumée, où le vin évolue savoureux, avec du gras et des tannins fins, sans austérité pour le millésime. C'est long et très bon. Assemblage : 67 % cabernet sauvignon, 24 % merlot, 5 % petit verdot, 4 % cabernet franc.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate An underrated wine that has shed its youthful austerity to offer terrific drinking today, the 2011 Branaire-Ducru exhibits aromas of sweet cassis, loamy soil, cigar wrapper and classy new oak, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated palate framed by powdery tannins and lively acids. On release, it was far from apparent that this would emerge as a charming classic, but in a blind tasting, I mistook it for the estate's 2010. (Note: 92+) 2021 -2045. William Kelley.
