Château Calon Ségur 2023

72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot Le bouquet révèle bien son élevage au travers de notes de bois frais. Rapidement, le terroir et le Cabernet Sauvignon prennent le dessus et confèrent autant d’authenticité que de pluralité. Ainsi, il révèle des nuances de poivre rose, de chocolat noir, d’eucalyptus, de sureau et de menthe poivrée complétées par de classiques notes de graphite et de cèdre. En bouche le vin se caractérise par sa densité, sa puissance, sa sérénité. Il incarne parfaitement la notion de force tranquille grâce à des tannins ronds et aux grains fins et à une structure acide incisive et énergisante. Un Calon qui ne cherche pas encore à séduire ; pour l’instant, il veut avant tout convaincre et se positionner au travers de son éclat, de son envergure, de sa persistance et de sa méticuleuse précision. Chaque chose en son temps. Et on relèvera, en guise de conclusion, que le côté plus tendre et emballant se profile doucement en arrière-plan. C’est de bon augure pour ce très grand Calon Ségur. As the alcohol becomes gentler, yet the palate remains tenderly soft, the Diao Chan-like charm of Château Calon Ségur grows increasingly dazzling. Its allure seems to emanate from every pore, compelling one to possess it utterly… Swirling the glass, countless sakura blooming in my eyes. Take a closer look, they are even covered with dew-dropped strawberries. The body is as delicate as soft tofu, fragile to the touch, yet it radiates a subtle luster without losing its juicy texture. Having tasted the 2023 vintage, I am even more convinced that mild vintage suit Château Calon Ségur better than hot ones. The 2023 vintage is indeed one to cherish.

Blackcurrant, blueberry, cedar, pine needle and black truffle here. I don't think much about the nose with barrel samples, but this is splendid. It's medium-bodied with very fresh acidity and fine, linear tannins that are long and lively. Energy here. Refined. Salty character at the last minute. I may like this better than 2022. A blend of 72% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, 12% cabernet franc and 1% petit verdot.

The 2023 Calon-Ségur is another en primeur success for this resurgent Saint-Estèphe third growth. Wafting from the glass with aromas of cassis, pencil shavings, wild berries and plums, it's medium to full-bodied, cool and layered, with a deep and integrated core, terrific concentration, lively acids and refined structuring tannins, concluding with a long, penetrating finish. It's a blend of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot that checks in at 14% alcohol.
